Private Green D. Smith was born in 1829 in Union County and there he was conscripted on August 23, 1862 to Company E of the 48th NCST. He had barely joined the company when he became ill with smallpox in the Winter of ’62/’63 and Spring of ’63, missing most of the action in that time. Before he could recover, he died of fever on April 20, 1863 while in camp at McPhersonville, South Carolina, leaving a young widow with 4 small children.
