Born in 1841, Watson Butcher Holyfield of Surry County, North Carolina, enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 4, 1861. He served in Company A of the 28th N.C. Infantry.
Holyfield was wounded at the battles at Gaines’ Mill, Wilderness, and Reams’ Station, Virginia, during the war. He returned to duty each time until the last time when a minié ball lodged in his left shoulder and rendered his arm useless. Watson Holyfield was buried at Rockford Baptist Church, at Rockford, Surry County, North Carolina. (Click on image to enlarge.)
