Tar Heel Soldier Died at Infamous New York Prison

Robert Ottaway enlisted in the Confederate army as a private at age 17, serving with 2nd North Carolina Light Artillery, Co. G. He was captured at Fort Fisher and was sent to the Elmira prison camp in New York. He died there of disease on May 5, 1865. Robert is buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery in New York.
