William J. Hill was born 1817 in Rowan County, NC. He was the son of Henry and Jane Hill. He was married three times: Milly Pool (1841), Avelina Black (1847), and Rachel Shepherd (17 July 1851). He was the father of 10 children, 6 boys and 4 girls. He was a private in the 49th North Carolina Regiment, Company C. He enlisted in Rowan County on March 19, 1862 and was present and accounted for until he died on July 25, 1864 in Richmond, Virginia. He is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in the Soldier Section V, Lot 711.
