Samuel Anders Dowless’ Bible still exists. Samuel and his wife, Sarah, lived in Bladen County, North Carolina, and Samuel fought for the Confederacy, serving in “Batty I” Company, N.C. 2nd Light Artillery. (See story entitled “Samuel Anders Dowless’ Civil War Story” to read Samuel’s full story.)
The Dowless’ Bible was published in 1846. The first page, which has Samuel’s name written on it, is hard to see, but the “Family Record” pages are still legible. (See photographs above. Click on image to enlarge.) The Bible is currently in the possession of a Dowless descendant.
