An Oral History
My grandmother, Nancy Effie Stroup, was a daughter of Jasper Stoe Stroup, a North Carolina native and Civil War veteran, who grew up in the community of Cuba, Kentucky. I remember her telling me that her Uncle Dane would visit her father, Jasper, about once a year or so, and they would reminisce about their Civil War experiences together. I remember that she said that everyone in the community was scared to death of Dane, since he was often drunk and carried a loaded rifle with him almost everywhere he went—even to the point of having it within his reach while he slept at night. According to family lore, Dane Stroup was a superb sharpshooter during his military service.
