JOHN H. AlKEN, son of THOMAS (1825-ca 1900) and REBECCA (HOXIT) AlKEN (1831-1912), was born January 8, 1855 in Cherryfield, Henderson Co., NC, the fifth of eight children. His father left the family sometime between 1860 and 1870. By 1870 the family was living in Jackson County, where they would live out the rest of their lives on Caney Fork. NANCY COWARD, daughter of BENJAMIN and NELLIE (FISHER) COWARD, caught the fancy of young John, and they were married on September 8, 1880 in Cowarts.3
