On Nov. 17, 1863, Felix Sluder enlisted in the Confederate Army and served in Company L of the 58th North Carolina. A few days later, on November 25th, he was captured at the Battle of Missionary Ridge near Chattanooga, Tennessee. After first being held at a military prison in Louisville, Kentucky, he was later transported to the prison at Rock Island in Illinois. There, on Jan. 25, 1864, he took the Oath of Allegiance and was released after joining the Union Navy.
