On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued the proclamation that declared that enslaved people in Confederate-held territory were free. This act, while not recognized by the Confederacy or Southern enslavers, encouraged more enslaved people to escape to freedom and authorized the formation of the United States Colored Troops.
With the end of the war and the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment on December 6, 1865, the institution of enslavement was officially abolished in the United States, freeing all formerly enslaved people. Faced with uncertainty about what this new freedom would mean for their civil and economic opportunities, they began to rebuild their lives and communities. The newly freed people searched for family members that had been sold away and united to form their own churches, schools, and other societal organizations.
