Editor’s Note: This is a sketch by Charles E. H. Bonwill for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, an illustrated literary and news publication that was founded in 1855 by Frank Leslie. The sketch was published October 24, 1863, and it depicts the ruins of Winton, N.C. after Union Troops burned the town on February 20, 1862. It was “the first burning of a town during the Civil War” (Parramore, “The Burning of Winton,” pg. 18). Click sketch to enlarge.
