John L. Southard was born 1839 and was the son of James and Ruth Gilliam Southard. He was a private in the 45th North Carolina Regiment called the Madison Greys. He resided in Rockingham County, NC and enlisted in Wayne County on May 8, 1862. He was present and accounted for until he died of disease in a hospital in Danville, Va on April 29, 1863.
