Edward Gray Southard (Edwin G.) was born in 1831 and was the son of James and Ruth Gilliam Southard.  He was married to Pamela Billingsly on 23 November 1860.  He was a private in the 45th North Carolina Regiment called the Madison Greys.  He resided in Rockingham County and enlisted in Wayne County on May 8, 1862.  He was present and accounted for through February 1865.  He was paroled at Greensboro, NC on May 11, 1865.  He survived the war and lived until 1880.
