Duncan J. Currie was born in Moore County, North Carolina, where he was a farmer prior to being conscripted into the Confederate army. He was married to Margaret Graham, sister to Catherine “Cate” Graham and daughter of Alexander and Ann Graham. On March 11, 1862, at the age of thirty-five, Currie mustered in as a corporal, serving in Company H of the 46th NC Infantry. He was present and accounted for through December 1864.
In a notarized affidavit supporting Margaret’s application for a Confederate widow’s pension, Neill A. McNeill, 2nd lieutenant of Company H, 46th NC Infantry, stated that Duncan J. Currie “was a member of [his] company and was shot on the picket line at Stony Creek, VA and died instantly.” Currie died on April 3, 1865, just 6 days prior to the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox. Currie’s wife, Margaret, and their small son, Daniel James, survived him.
