I am a descendant of Lieutenant Luther Rice Mills of the 26th Virginia Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia. While he lived in Virginia at the time of the War, I thought that you might find his story interesting as after the War he became a Professor of Mathematics at Wake Forest College [now Wake Forest University] for 40 years. At the end of the Civil War, he was captured and imprisoned. He wrote a first person narrative of what happened and it is about 18 pages long. If you would like to read his story, you can find it at this website (from the Library at UNC Chapel Hill): https://finding-aids.lib.unc.edu/00512/
