Alvis Cornelius Webb was born in 1836 in Wentworth, North Carolina, the son of John and Elizabeth. On July 25, 1857, he married Chaney Ann Victoria Carter. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on February 27, 1862 in Rockingham County. He was taken POW during the “Through the Wilderness” campaign and was sent via Point Lookout, Maryland to Elmira POW camp where he died of pneumonia. He is buried there. Although he was very sick and had no family with him, I am assured by George Farr of the genealogical society of Elmira, NY that he was surrounded by friends from his unit as he passed away.
