Hugh Caldwell Bennett (14 Dec. 1832 – 3 March 1907) was the son of George Stepto Bennett and Elizabeth Newland Bennett of Iredell County, NC. He enlisted in Company F, North Carolina 3rd Cavalry Regiment on 07 Oct. 1861 as a Corporal and was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 13 May 1862.

His regiment was sent to Virginia and incorporated in the command of Maj. Gen. W. H. Fitzhugh Lee’s Cavalry Division. On 1 June, 1864 while in charge of a scouting expedition, he was wounded and was sent to the Confederate State Hospital at Petersburg, Virginia. He had a furlough lasting until 12 Sept. 1864 and returned to duty until the end of the war.

After the war, he took up his life farming, operating country stores, saw-milling and tanning.

He married Nancy Caroline Baxter and had 11 children.
