My great-great-great-uncle was John B. Evans. He fought in the Confederate Army. After the war he returned to his home near Williamsboro in Granville County (now Vance County). A group of Union soldiers rode up to his home one day. The captain noticed that John Evans had on a Masonic ring. The captain wore a similar ring. He told his men to take only water for themselves and their horses and nothing more. I think it is interesting that there were certain things which bound people together even in times of sharp differences.
