James Spence Frazier was the youngest child of eight children born to Ephraim and Elizabeth Blackwell Frazier of Granville County, North Carolina.  He was the first of his brothers to volunteer for Company I, 23rd Regiment of the North Carolina Infantry. His first letters home were enthusiastic but after Manassas the tone of the letters changed. He died in Petersburg at the hospital 2 February 1862. It is not known where he is buried.
