Clement Dowd was of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, N.C. He was born in Richland Creek of Moore County, N.C., on August 27, 1832. In 1861, Dowd enlisted in the Confederate Army, serving in Company H of the 26th NC Troops (CSA), but resigned after about a year due to illness. After the war ended, he was the mayor of Charlotte, N.C., 1869-71, and he also served as the U.S. Representative from North Carolina 6th District from 1881- 85. Dowd died on April 15, 1898; he was interred at Elmwood Cemetery, Charlotte, N.C.
