My Grandmother b: 1877 told me this story:

Some Union soldiers came to her Aunt Mary Watson Triplett’s house in Wilkes County, N. C.They made her cook a meal for them. One Union soldier sat in the kitchen while she cooked with his gun laying across his lap. When the Union soldiers left they took her cow. After it was dark Mary and another person went to look where they had camped with her cow. They found the camp and the cow and Mary bundled the cow bells up in her apron and took the cow home.
